LADYMINSTER
A Day in the life of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian monks of Ladyminster
The muted silence shrouds the bright night in the front range, as a creak of a door snaps the silence. Four monks make their way around the outside into the main sanctuary, dark pointed hoods guarding against the single-digit temperatures. They sing hymnals dimly lit by the flickering candles on the altar and the reading lights illuminating their text.
Vigil, 4:30 AM
Father Abbot Theodore warmly smiles through the icy cold sunrise in between the first and second prayers held during the day. On Sundays, the monastery observes a total of seven prayer times during the day, from the 4:30 am hymnals harmonizing in the soundshells of the sanctuary, called Vigil, to quiet contemplation at 6:30 pm by themselves in their simple rooms, called Compline.
